Does Your Vehicle Require an Emission Test?
Under the Ontario DriveON program, heavy-duty diesel vehicles must pass an emission inspection to renew their registration. You likely need a test if:
- Weight: Your diesel vehicle has a Gross Weight (GVWR) of more than 4,500 kg (approx. 9,920 lbs).
- Age: The vehicle is seven years or older (based on the calendar year the vehicle reaches its 7th anniversary).
- Requirement: A "pass" result must be recorded in the DriveON system before the Ministry will allow a license plate renewal.

Fleet FAQ: Diesel Emissions
1. How often do I need to test my diesel vehicle?
For heavy-duty diesel vehicles over 4,500 kg, the test is typically required annually once the vehicle reaches its seventh year of age.
2. What if my "Check Engine" light is currently on?
If your vehicle has an active "Check Engine" light or an emissions-related fault code, it may not pass the DriveON inspection. We recommend having these faults diagnosed and repaired prior to proceeding with the formal test. Our technicians are experts in diesel diagnostics and can help identify the root cause to ensure your vehicle is ready to pass.
3. Does a trailer need an emissions test?
No. Emissions testing only applies to the "power unit" (the truck or van) that contains the diesel engine. However, remember that the trailer may still require its own Annual Safety Inspection.
4. What is the "Opacity" test?
The test measures the smoke density of your exhaust. We use specialized sensors to ensure your engine is operating within the environmental standards set by the Province of Ontario.
